I read 20 marketing job posts on LinkedIn: the one asking for 7 roles, and what it reveals

Last week I ran a test: I read the first 20 marketing job posts LinkedIn showed me.

One of them asked for paid media management, video editing, social media, event organisation, CRM and "support for the sales team". All in the same role. Junior analyst salary.

I do not see a job post there. I see an X-ray of how that company sees marketing.

Whoever writes a description like that is not hiring a person, they are outsourcing an indecision. Nobody in the company decided what marketing needs to generate, so the posting asks for everything. Whoever takes the job will run seven functions with no axis, and in 18 months the board will conclude that "this was not what we needed". And post the same job again.

I have worked in marketing for 20 years and I have watched that cycle repeat in companies of every size. It is almost never a people problem. It is a structural problem nobody names, and that no hire can fix.

I gave that missing axis a name: narrative. Not the storytelling kind, the other one, the criterion that defines what marketing does and, above all, what it turns down.

Before opening your next role, run this test: what does this function need to generate for the business in 12 months? If the internal answer is "depends on the day", the problem is not the candidate.

Have you seen (or held) a job like that? Tell me how it ended.
